Book club guide

Read together. Begin together.

Discussion questions for each part, a group exercise and tips so your club leaves with something already in motion.

How to use this guide

Three meetings

The book falls naturally into three parts. We suggest one meeting per part, with two or three weeks between them to practice.

Practice before you talk

Every chapter ends with a ten-minute exercise. Conversations go deeper when the group has actually tried it.

Sharing is optional

Some exercises touch on personal ground. Agree up front that everyone shares only what they want to.

A visit from the author

Marisol can join clubs of eight or more by video call, schedule permitting.

Part one

Clearing space

Chapters 1–4 · pp. 3–76

  1. What surprised you most when you did the inventory in chapter 1? Which column filled up fastest?
  2. Marisol writes about “permission slips” we wait for. Whose permission have you been waiting on?
  3. Why do you think the smallest version of a habit is the one that lasts? Share a time that was true for you.
  4. What makes a “small no” so hard to say? Which relationships make it hardest?
  5. If you cleared one hour a week, what would you protect it for?

Part two

Choosing a direction

Chapters 5–8 · pp. 79–156

  1. Curiosity before courage: what's something you're curious about but haven't let yourself explore?
  2. Draw your People Map together. Without naming names, what patterns did you notice?
  3. Design a four-week trial run as a group. What would you test, and how would you know it worked?
  4. Chapter 8 says grief is part of the plan. What are you letting go of in order to begin?
  5. Which story from part two stayed with you, and why?

Part three

Keeping going

Chapters 9–12 · pp. 159–248

  1. Try the weekly reset before you meet. What did you choose for your “three”?
  2. What does sliding back usually look like for you? What helps you restart without starting over?
  3. How have the people around you reacted to changes you've made? What did chapter 11 suggest?
  4. What does “room for what's next” mean to you now, compared with when you started the book?
  5. If you could give one chapter to someone you love, which would it be?

30 minutes

Group exercise: the shared inventory

  1. Everyone writes, anonymously on index cards, three things they carry that they didn't choose.
  2. Shuffle the cards and read them aloud without commenting or guessing whose is whose.
  3. Sort them into chapter 1's three columns: chose, inherited, drifted into.
  4. Talk it through: what do they have in common? What would a small first step be for any of them?
